My house was built in the fifties and I'm pretty sure the attic insulation was installed improperly. The insulation facing if facing up even though the vaper barrier itself says that it should be facing the living space. What should I do?

The insulation is also compressed and the vaper barrier is ripped. How can I fix this and better insulate my home without removing all of the existing insulation?

i think replacing the whole of it is a better option. since you won't be worrying about the old insulation stuff from rotting and you will be getting better insulation with new materials.
