removal of old insulation before blowing in new insulation | |
my wife and i are going to put in blown in insulation in out attic. should we take out the old insulation before doing so? the house is 50 years old and has one layer of cellulose insulation with pink insulation on top. also, when we do blow the insulation in should we build boxes around ceiling light fixtures?

you don't need to remove the old insulation unless there is a significant reason for doing so. as long as the insulation isn't littered with junk it should be almost as good as the stuff you blow in.
consult the install instructions for the fixtures. some are built to have insulation touching them, others aren't. most aren't. it is safer to build boxes around them, but may be unnecessary depending on the type.
