how do you measure r-factor in an attic



the builder of my house says i have r-38 insulation in my attic. i have measured and blown-in insulation is 17" thick (deep). what does that mean to me?

it means you builder wasn't lying. r value of insulation is between 1.7 and 3.5 per inch for blown in insulation. the most common types are between 2 and 2.5 for the inexpensive insulation.
