under-floor crawlspace insulation? | |
my 1850s house has a small one-story addition that was put on around 1900. the floor, hardwood covered by carpeting, of this addition is not over a proper foundation but just separated from the bare ground by a "crawlspace" of about 4 or 5 inches. (and yes, the floor tilts some, but appears to have been stable for at least the last 50 years.)
the floor is very, very cold in winter. would filling the crawlspace with insulation help? and if so, is expanding foam insulation appropriate here, given the impossibility of getting anything else in there without ripping up the foor and starting from scratch? are there any drawbacks to filling that space with insulation of some kind?

considering you don't want to ripoff the floor for installation, the best you can do is to install vinyl insulation in between the floor and the carpet. just lay down the insulation on the floor.
