effects of compressing 6" fiberlgass insulation into a 3.5" space.

my attic has been re-insulated with 6" insulation over the original insulation. the original insulation has been compressed over time and really serves no purpose. the new insulation rises above the 2x4 ceiling joists about 2 or 3 inches. i would like to put flooring down in the attic to use it for storage but am concerned about compressing the insulation.

will the r value of the 6" insulation be decreased so much by compressing it into a 3.5" space that it would be less effective than new 3.5" (r-11) insulation? should i install new r-11 or r-13 insulation in the area where i will put the flooring? (or just compress it into the 3.5" space)?.

thanks!!

efficacy would definitely be affected for that insulation since it was designed for that thickness. you may want to get a material with high insulation efficacy with a 3.5 inch thickness.
