adding insulation over old blown in insulation | |
i have a home that was built in 1960 in long beach, california. the original attic insulation is the blown in type, but i do not know what type it is. it looks like white cotton. the current insulation is varies in depth, but typically does not reach the top of the attic's 2x6 or 2x8s (i am not sure what size they are). i just recently installed a black composition roof and would like to add more insulation in the attic to reduce the increased heat that will occur because of installing a black roof. i would like your opinion on whether to remove the old insulation and replace it will the pink fiberglass rolls, leave the old insulation in the attic and install the fiberglass rolls on top of it, or have more blown in insulation put over the existing insulation. thank you for your assistance in this matter.

it sounds like you have old mineral wool in your attic from the 60's. good product how ever it is very itchy if you climb around in it.
i would suggest you leave your old white mineral wool in place and use another blown-in insulation over the top. your ceiling joist are more likely 2x4 or 2x6 and you are looking at an existing r-11 to r-15. hope this is of some help to you.
