im not sure when you wrote this question but i can tell you that yes there is a thing as too much insulation. if you compact insulation in anyway it decreases its effectiveness to block heat transfer. now if you have for example 12 inches of space depth and you put two layers of 6 inch insulatoin back to back that is acceptable. but if you try squeezing two layers of 6 inch insulation in a 6 inch space then you have reduced the effectiveness of the insulation and would have been more effective with just one layer. insulation is mearly a fiiller that promotes poor hear transfer. once you squeeze the air out of the insulation it becomes a better conduction of heat. hope this helps.

From: Sam

at a certain point it does not become cost effective, especially if you are paying to have the extra insulation installed. assume you are loosing half the heat through the insulated area and the rest through windows and infiltration. if you double the insulation, you lower your heat loss by 25 percent, which may be worth while in a cold climate. however, adding a third and fourth layer together will only save an additional 12.5 percent. after the first layer, each additional layer saves dramatically less. the most cost effective thing you can do in a cold climate is to weatherstrip your windows and doors.
