What is the life of insulation?

Our home was built in the mid 50s. The attic area has some form of insulation which practically disintegrates when stirred with a prod. Is this still functioning or has it deterioated? It is very powdery when stirred. What is the normal life of insulation and when should it be replaced?

usually, insulation lasts for about 50 years. i think just to make sure that your insulation won't be creating health and home risks to your family, better replace it with a new material.
