How to insulate a garage ceiling? | |
• You will need to measure the width and length of your garage ceiling. That can be done using the floor because they are the same size.
• Multiply the figures and find out the square footage.
• Measure the width in between the joists and determine the needed width of insulation that you have to buy.
• Next you should measure the joists’ size to find out the R-Value and thickness you will be able to use. A lot of garage ceilings are fitted with R-25 insulation and it can fit in a joist cavity of 8 inches. For joists of 10 inches, do opt for R-30.
• Checking the local building code is helpful in determining if you require a vapor barrier
• You will need to buy Fiberglass batts, a staple hammer a d staples, some twine, a utility knife and a ladder.
• Wear protective gear and start in a corner of your garage. Start placing the batts in the ceiling cavities.
• For the kraft paper batts ensure the paper side faces the garage floor. Secure those as you continue stapling the flanges onto the joist bottoms. Some of these runs might be wider and require you to cut additional strips of insulation for the cavity.
• When making cuts, it is best to use plywood than the garage floor because it will dull the blade. Using scrap insulation, fill any spaces or gaps in the insulated ceiling.
