How to install window insulation film? | |
• For a double hung window, clean the sash bottom. With foam weatherstripping cut it to the appropriate length. Peel the backing off and press the strip onto the sash. Cut two pats of the V-channel an inch longer than the sash height. Press it in the jamb, tapping in finishing nails.
• Cut some V-channel with the sash’s width. Raise the sash a bit, peeling the back and pressing it firmly in the sash back even with the upper. The V ought to open face up so the weatherstripping insulates the window.
• For a casement window, open it to clean the outside using soapy water. Let the stops dry. Cut some strips of the self-adhesive foam to stuff the top, sides and bottom. Take the backing off the foam strips, pressing them in place outside the stops.
• Close the window to apply rope caulking on the inside sash edges of the double-hung window if you are willing to not open the window all winter. Smooth it with a spoon. If the weather improves, you can peel off the caulking.
• Hanging plastic sheets with tacking strips on the window frame is a good alternative method.
• Hardware stores have a shrink-wrap kit which requires a hand-held hair dryer and shrinks the sheeting in its place. Install it on metal, painted wood and vinyl clad frames with a double-sided tape. Follow the provided instructions. The methods protect the entire window, not just its frame, from drafts.
