How Do I Know What Width of Insulation to Purchase?

The width of necessary insulation depends entirely on the building method of your home. If your house is build on a frame that is visible from the inside than the insulation has to be as wide as to fill the frames before either wall, ceiling or floor tiles are placed on it. If the walls are made of finished blocs than the insulation has to be as wide as to cover the whole surface from one end to the other so it does not leave any gaps in between of the insulation tiles.

Actually when buying the insulation the width is not that important as most of the insulation can be cut into proper size so either if it is too big you can make it fit or if there is not enough than you can cut some addition from another tile.

The main idea is that the insulation has to cover the whole surface properly or otherwise it does not have the full effect. So once you are buying insulation than it does not hurt to buy a little extra just to be sure that you in the end you do not have to go back to the hardware store as you are missing a little bit of the insulation.
