How to insulate metal ducts? | |
· Put on safety goggles, work gloves and a dust mask and protect yourself while working. Set up a ladder for the ducts, if needed.
· Seal all connecting seams of your metal ducts with a metal duct tape. Using a rag, wipe off the first seam off to remove any dirt and debris.
· Unroll your tape around the duct diameter and determine how long your first piece has to be. Cut your tape to the need length.
· Peel off its protective backing. Position the end of this tape so that its center covers the center of this seam. Apply the tape onto the seam, pressing it down to get rid of any air bubbles. Seal all the seams.
· Measure the duct’s diameter with a measuring tape, adding two inches. Measure to cut an insulation piece to that size.
· Wrap the insulation so that the vapor barrier is away from these ducts, wrapping it snugly. Secure its end using duct tape.
· Measure to cut the next insulation piece. Wrap it around the following duct section so that it overlaps the previous piece by a few inches. Secure the insulation into place. Continue to insulate the remaining air ducts in the same way.
Finish your project by taping all seams where the insulation pieces overlap one another with duct tape.
