How to insulate a steel building? | |
· Insulate with Rigid Foam Sheets
o Attach the rigid foam sheets onto the interior surface of your metal walls, holding the sheets in place using foam adhesive. The foam can be bought in different thicknesses, while the most common is one- or two-inches. The more foam you use, the better your insulation is.
o Trim the foam strips to butt up snugly against obstacles or vertical supporting members to minimize heat loss and drafts.
o If you plan on applying more than a single layer, overlap the sheets, staggering the joints between them to block drafts.
· Insulate with Blown-In Cellulose Insulation
o Build interior walls with metal or steel studs, and leave a space between them and your existing metal exterior walls.
o Extend all frames around windows.
o Remove outlets and fixtures from your exterior wall; they have to be reinstalled on your interior wall.
o Install insulation underneath the windows before you cover the wall surface, because the blown-in insulation doesn’t effectively penetrate those areas.
o Apply drywall onto the new interior frame and leave either a series of holes or a continuous space at the top, down from your ceiling.
o Blow cellulose insulation in the space between your two walls after this interior wall is finished. The larger this space is, the more it insulates and the warmer your home is. However, that takes more money and space.
