Why you have to insulate pipes?

When you have insulated your home and you think you are now ready for winter, there is probably something you have forgotten. It’s the pipes, which need to be insulated as well. The reason for this is that the pipes are also a source of heat loss and in especially crisp winters un-insulated pipes are very likely to freeze. Insulated pipes are also useful during warm weather as insulation will keep the pipes from sweating.

Here are some pointers concerning pipe insulation:

-         Be sure to clean the pipes of rust and dirt before insulating to help the insulation stick better and tape any slits or holes there may be on the pipes;

-         the best type of insulation is a tape with insulating quality – it is easy to apply and protects your pipes reducing heat loss, another way of insulating is using plastic foam or woolly pipe jackets or blankets which are attached by wire ties, tape or plastic bands;

-         when you use tape as insulation, wrap it spirally around the pipe and be sure to wrap also the joints.

-         Do not wrap the insulation material around the pipe too tight or it will not help reduce heat loss.
