When installing vapor retarder it has to be in one piece so it would work properly, thus it is very important that you would repair the torn vapor retarder or if you do not than there is no point of installing any more vapor retarder as it will not what it is supposed to.
So if you want your home to have proper installation than leaving the damaged vapor retarder is not the right way. This will cause you further problems in the long run and might result in you having to reinstall the whole insulation as it is damaged due to the lack of vapor retarder.
It can never be emphasized enough that vapor retarder has to be installed in a way that there are no gaps or openings between the tiles, in addition to installing it to the edges of windows, doors and other areas where vapor might gather. If there are some gaps between the vapor retarder than it will start to damage the surrounding insulation and also the walls where it is installed.
To conclude, if you are installing insulation and are applying vapor retarder than yes, you have to repair it once it has been torn.
