Have you recognized that sometimes the water coming from the hot water tap is not hot at all and in order for it to get hotter you must wait and let the water flow for minutes? This is mainly because your pipes are not insulated or not insulated properly. If you live in an area, where the winters are cold, one morning you may have an unpleasant surprise – no water flows from the tap because the water has frozen in the pipes.
All this can be prevented by properly insulating the pipes avoiding heat loss through the pipes or preventing them from freezing.
All the materials available on the market today are water-resistant materials with low thermal conductivity.
There are several materials of insulation – fibreglass blanket insulation or mineral wool blanket insulation, the common and easy-to-use foam-type insulation often referred to as “rubber”, cellular glass insulation, calcium silicate insulation and more. The usage of these usually depends on the material of the pipes – plastic or PVC pipes, copper or iron pipes and also on the location of the pipes – whether underground, inside or outside the house.
Mostly the insulation materials come in form of thick blankets, which are wrapped around the pipes as well as joints and fastened with tape.
