Spray Foam Insulation

Though everybody's favourite insulation material has for years been fibreglass, new alternatives are also entering the market to push fibreglass off its throne. Spray foam insulation is one of them. This insulation material consists of polyurethan and is installed through a small nozzle as a liquid, which will expand after contact with air.

It has several advantages before fibreglass insulation; we will list some of them here:

-         as installing fibreglass leaves  a lot of fibre dust flying around which may irritate your respiratory system, plastic foam will harden and not leave any dust;

-         plastic foam is fire- and water-resistant and is not affected by humidity or insects;

-         plastic foam is thicker in consistence than other insulation materials and therefore provides better protection from cold air and humidity;

-         as the foam expands after spraying, it will fill the smallest holes and gaps in the process.

-         After applying foam, the excessive foam can be cut or rasped so the surface of the insulation would level with wall panels or corners.

However, you need a professional to install your spray foam insulation as special instruments and machinery are needed.

There are really no disadvantages to speak of. You will pay more for spray foam than traditional insulation

Spray is more expensive, but also boasts a higher R value which will offset that cost over the life of your home. It is also healthier for the workers who apply it. My company made the switch and regret nothing about it.

Can spray foam be used in walls with no insulation without having to take off the drywall like you can with blown in foam? One other question I have is what about walls with pipes and wireing? can this foam be used around these types of items and if they can what happens in the event of failure in some other product ie pipes?

i have some closet walls that are very cold and do not appear to have been insulated. Can I spray some foam insulation in them without removing any of the drywall. there are no wires or pipes that I know of since this is a ranch home.

What are the health concerns of using spray foam insulation in an unvented crawlspace below a sunroom and bedroom?
Is polystyrene or polyurethane the same or different? What about icynene? Is it safer and more environmentally friendly or are the others safe after installation. I am concerned about off gases for people who have allergies.

I have a 90 year old house that is being completely stripped down to the studs. The house has lap wooden siding with foam board and siding over top. Can I use the spray in foam on the outer walls? Will the foam push the wooden siding loose?

I am looking into using agribalance spray foam. It is 20% vegetable oil and as far as I can understand, 80% polyurethane. Isn't polyurethane a type of plastic, and doesn't plastic off-gas toxins its entire life? I am wondering if you know of any environmental cons to this product or where I could look up that information - I have already searched the web.

My home is 157 yr old stone farm house. We have a full attic that is open with hard wood flooring and it presently has original insulation (bat type). We want to increase the insulation value. What would be the best type for an open rafter attic? We use it for storage on a daily basis and access is key. My husband uses polyurethane at work and has access to a sprayer. One contractor told us to lift the floor by 11" and install roll insulation. This is a laborious job as we need to re-floor it later to have the storage available and lift the beams in the roof so that we can walk around. I hate to cut the beam in this historic house. Could we insulate the roof instead? Is there another way? What product would be best for us? Thank you for you assistance

I have a 100 year old house and recently had the antique floor restored. There is no sub-floor (no plywood), just the heart pine flooring over the floor joists. We removed the fiberglass insulation from under the floor (pier and beam house) because it was falling down, absorbing water and provided nesting areas for squirrels. Now we have no insulation under the floor. Is spray insulation the best option for under the floor of my house and will it last in damp conditions (live in Houston nothing we can do about the humidity)? Also, the antique floor is not completely tight and tongue and grooved so will the insulation squeeze up through the floor gaps? OK, if all is good...now I need someone who can actually do it. Any suggestions? Thanks!
